In April and May of this year, Marita Hewitt will take up an artist’s residency at The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China. This city is regarded as the porcelain capital of the world with over 1,700 years of documented porcelain production. Today, Jingdezhen continues to be a functioning hub of masters using communal kilns and traditional techniques. Marita says that “the residency is for research, observation, and educational purposes. I don’t intend to complete any finished work, but will likely be conducting a number of tests, having a go with local minerals, new recipes, and wood fire communal kilns.”
Marita’s residency has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Creative New Zealand.
