Tinakori Gallery opened its doors in December 1987 on Wellington’s Tinakori Road. Concentrating at first on historical works and primarily dealing in secondary market sales, the Gallery quickly established itself as an authority in this field. However, over the course of the thirteen years in these premises, the focus became increasingly contemporary, which prompted a move to the larger and more centrally located Featherston Street.

Led by the vision of founding Director Marcia Page, the Gallery has continued to evolve to meet the changing needs of the artists and clientele. By 2006, as Wellington’s central business district developed, the decision was made to relocate again – this time to Victoria Street. With over 330m2, including two independent exhibiting spaces, extensive storage and private viewing areas, the Gallery is the largest and most versatile commercial art venue in Wellington.

In December 2007 the business began trading as Page Blackie Gallery, coinciding with its 20th birthday celebrations. The change of name is a reflection of the Directors’ commitment to the future (James Blackie became a partner in April) and the geographical and ideological shift that has taken place since the Gallery’s origins in Tinakori Road.

Page Blackie Gallery represents twenty–three of the country’s finest contemporary practitioners and is a leading presence in the New Zealand art scene, as demonstrated by regular attendance at national and international art fairs. The Gallery also procures and manages commissions on behalf of the artists.

In addition, the Gallery provides guidance on the purchase and placement of artwork in the domestic and corporate environment, undertakes written valuations, and advises on care and conservation.
