Toss Woollaston famously always considered his portraits vital to his wider painting practice, where his studies of the human form were as much a demonstration of his fascination with the ‘human landscape’ as of his natural surroundings. Woollaston would approach painting a portrait with the same treatment as a landscape, celebrating planes of light and shade in the subject, using broad expressive brush strokes and abandoning realism in favour of mood and atmosphere.

This exhibition is the largest dedicated Woollaston portrait exhibition ever mounted. These powerful paintings cover over fifty years of the artist’s studies of family, friends, colleagues and neighbours.
